Crook Hall and Gardens

Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Today we visited Crook Hall and Gardens, it's one of the oldest inhabited preoperties in Durham dating from 1217 and is literally a stones throw from the hotel. It was £8 each to get in, and you eneter through the cafe at the bottom of the garden. As you enter the garden there is a fabulous maze, it was planted in the year 2000 and is simply aMAZEing. After a few wrong turns we found our way to the castle in the centre; you can climb up and have a view across the top of the maze, brilliant! The gardens were delightful, broken up into small sections including a secret garden, walled garden and an orchard to name a few. There was also a number of lawned sections throughout the gardens with tables setup where customers were enjoying afternoon tea.

We were treated to much nicer weather today with quite a bit of blue sky and sunshine popping through the clouds and it made for a nice warm wander about. We also had a wander around the manor house which is still the private residence of the Bell family. It is part medieval and part Georgian and most of house is open allowing visitors to wander freely. We unfortunately didn't encounter the white lady, ghost of the property, perhaps next time!

Heading back in time

Monday, August 20, 2018

We decided to take a short break in Durham this week between results days at school having last been about 9 years ago for a wedding. We managed to get a late deal on lastminute.com and have ended up staying at the same hotel, the Radisson Blu, just a short walk from the city centre. The weather was fine yesterday, a little cloudy and a light shower but fairly warm for wandering about. We visted the Cathedral which is undergoing some repair work on the main tower at the moment. It is pretty spectacular inside, but no photography allowed I'm afriad so you'll just have to visit it yourselves. Inside the cathedral there is a coffee shop where we stopped for some cake and tea and inside the cathedral shop there is a huge replica of the cathedral itself made out of Lego - its fabulous!

We also managed to get on a tour of the castle which is used as student accomodation during term time. In addition to staying in the main castle two students get to live in the gatehouse which looks pretty awesome. The tour was interesting taking in the ancient Norman Chapel and then a more modern tudor chapel before walking through a gallery and down the black stairs to the great hall. We realised when we arrived in the great hall, that this was the venue for Luke and Helen's wedding 9 years ago, it's a really nice venue with the bar in the undercroft below.

Today we visited Beamish which is only about 20 minutes drive from where we're staying. I visited a long time ago, but Dani had never been. It was probably one of the busiest places we've visited this holiday, with quite a long queue to get in. The tickets were £19 each but last a year so hopefully we'll find a chance to revisit for free. For those who haven't been, Beamish is an open air museum representing life in Britain in the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. It's a huge site with period buildings, vehicles and machinery.

The majority of the buildings have been deconstructed brick by brick to be transported from their original locations to there new home at Beamish. Amongst the very impressive exhibits is the 1900s town with a range of shops including a bakery, grocers, and bank and a masonic lodge. You can walk around the site or catch any of the period vehicles including trams and buses. Despite leaving at closing time we still hadn't made it all the way around and still have the train station and farm to see, maybe next time!

A well-deserved rest in Sussex...

Monday, August 6, 2018

...At least, we feel like we deserve a break after our two weeks of constructing and decorating our new summerhouse!

We'd booked a cottage in Battle, the historic site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066, in East Sussex, and made it down safely on Saturday after a few jobs - getting some new glazing cut and fitted, a third and final coat of paint, a trip to the tip... It was a good job that Sussex is only a couple of hours away. Had a good journey, with barely any traffic, and found our way to 'Little Barn', where we were greeted by the owner. A very bijoux little one bed cottage, with a small kitchenette. We got ourselves organised and then looked up a local supermarket to get some essentials. Struggled to find anything that we particularly wanted for tea in the supermarket - some options, but quite limited - but then discovered the local Chinese takeaway next door! So, instead, got some bits for breakfast and then stopped next door for a Chinese. Took only about 15 mins and we were on our way! Relaxed with some drinks for the rest of the evening.

Sunday was bright and warm - maintaining the heatwave standards! We decided to take it easy so drove down into the town of Battle to visit 'Battle Abbey'. As it was English Heritage, we got in for free (winner, winner!) and so moseyed around at a leisurely pace - and it was very leisurely as it was very warm. More or less followed the audio tour around the grounds, learning some fun facts about the battle of Hastings, and then retreated into the shade of the abbey ruins. Although a ruin, there was still a fair part of the abbey standing, and beautiful medieval stonework. Treated ourselves to an ice-cream to cool down and then had a little wander in the town, dipping into a couple of shops before heading back to the car.

We decided to go straight from Battle to the nearby Tescos, just outside Hastings, to get some more supplies as our foray to the local supermarket yesterday was not so successful. Managed to get ourselves some bargain Charlie Bigham meals, so all sorted for the week ahead! Headed back to the cottage in the late afternoon and just slothed about.

Managed to keep cool overnight and so felt a bit more refreshed on Monday. Set out to visit a couple of National Trust places nearby - it is quite a hubbub of NT places round here! Started at Bodium castle - an original medieval castle facade, although it is ruined on the inside. We could still go up a tower though, so got a good view of the surrounding area. Spent quite a bit of time wandering around the moat, watching dragonflies flitting about. Also caught a glimpse of some late ducklings - a little brood of four fluffballs, all so tiny! There wasn't a huge amount to see, so we stopped for a refreshing cream tea in the cafe and then made our way to Sissinghurst Castle garden, a beautiful garden originally designed by Vita Sackville-West, and, although it had suffered quite a lot in the heat, was still delightful - lots of separate garden 'rooms', often themed by colour. Ben spent many an enjoyable minute taking photos of insects on the flowers... while I sat, alternating between sun and shade! Stopped in the tea shop for a drink before making our way to the car and driving back to the cottage.

A busy two weeks

Sunday, August 5, 2018

We've now been in the house just over a year and have been waiting to sort out the lounge for quite a while. We had settled on a herringbone pattern wood floor for the lounge having found something we liked at B&Q. After getting a couple of fitters around, we decided to change the flooring to a smaller oak parquet tile which we managed to source from a local company. We arranged for the fitter to come and sort the floor out this week so set about repainting last week. We decided to go for a nice Farrow and Ball colour named Vardo as a feature wall and white for the main wall to keep it nice and bright.

We had also ordered a new summerhouse for the garden having decided our existing shed was a bt too small. We bought it online and it was delivered last Thursday. We managed to move the old shed in one piece on to the garden to hold the current bits in it until the summerhouse was completed. In the end we managed to put the summerhouse the same day it was delivered, although it was a pretty long (and hot) day finishing up about 8.30pm. The only thing we hadn't done was fit the glass, deciding to wait until we had painted everything. long story short, whilst our floor fitter was fitting the new wood floor, we spent the last week adding extra support under the floor of the summerhouse, painting and sealing it, inside and out and finally adding guttering and glazing.

There's still a few more projects to work through, but I think it's time for a bit of a rest :-)
