Yesterday we saw an update from ZSL Whipsnade on Facebook, apparently they have a new baby rhino. With our shiney new membership cards in hand, we set off an afternoon at the zoo. It's the first time we've made use of the membership at Whipsnade since signing up, although we did go to ZSL London Zoo in the summer. We haven't ever been to the zoo outside of the summer season and so we were really suprised to arrive and get a parking spot right next to the entrance. I guess being winter it really is a lot quieter.
We didn't arrive until the afternoon, so didn't have enough time to cover the whole park so we started to head towards the Rhino enclosure first. On the way we stopped by to see the red pandas. last time we were here in the summer, the red pandas were really difficult to see, high up in the tree, but today they were at the bottom, happily scoffing the vegitatiom, we stayed for a little while taking some photos - I'd only brought the big lens, and the pandas were so close I struggled to fit them all in.
We managed to see the recently named Zhiwa, a baby one horned white rhino born early December. She was wiggling all over the place at high speed, compared to her mum that seemed to watch on patiently. We finished off the day with a wander by the tigers. they were just being let back in to their private enclosure having been in the main enclosure earlier. The cubs that we first saw a year ago are now very much fully grown and much more intimidating. Overall we had a really good afternoon, leaving right at closing time. Hopefully we'll make it along again before long.
